California residents and military service members stationed within California should take advantage of the free training offered in the following fields:  computers, auto technology, medical/dental, photography, real-estate, truck driving, metal working & fabrication, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I have never attended college before.  What do I do first?
    You should visit the Education Center and attend “College 101.”  If you sign-up for classes before this brief you may miss the opportunity to find a program that is best for your long term goals.
     
  • How do I enroll in MCI’s or Marine Corps University PME courses?
    Professional Military Education is handled by the Station S3 Training Office. Call (858) 577-1373/1374.

  • Does the Education Center provide school supplies like pens, paper, laptops, or note books?
    No.  Check with internet resources or message boards at your school or the Education Office. Below are a few suggested links. These links are not controlled by the Education Office and you are subject to the rules and regulations of the site.
  • Can I take my College placement tests at the Education Office?
    Yes, but only if your school will provide the Education office with a copy of the test and authorization for it to be administered.
     
  • Can the Education Center enter my grades into the system so I get my promotion points?
    No, your grades must be entered in the Marine Corps Total Forces System by your command’s admin section.


  • Can the Education Center correct my SMART transcript?
    Check the last page of the SMART transcript for the instructions for making corrections. If corrections can not be made using that method contact an education counselor for assistance and guidance.
     
  • Can the Education Center tell me what my scores are on Military Classification Tests? (ASVAB, DLPT ect.)
    No, when you take an exam the Education Center sends it to HQMC for grading and direct input into the Marine Corps Total Forces System.
  • Do I really get 100% Tuition Assistance?
    Yes, as long as the cost of the course falls within the unit caps and does not exceed $4500 per fiscal year.  Check with individual branch of service for additional regulations.

  • How long will it take for my TA request form to be processed?                                                
    There is normally same day turn around time for processing TA request. If you are require a degree plan or SOC agreement, missing grades or owe payments for failing grades, withdrawals or incomplete it may take several additional days to resolve the issue(s).


  • How do I know if I have the GI Bill kicker or the College Fund?                                                  
    To verify that you have paid the additional $600 into your GI Bill look at your Leave and Earns Statement (LES) where it shows the amount of money paid into your GI Bill.  Regular GI Bill will show $1200.  GI Bill “kicker” will show $1800.  You must call the Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) to verify the status of the College Fund.  Please ensure you do this prior to your EAS.


  • Can my spouse or children use my TA or GI Bill?
    No; however, there are some links that you can check for education funds for your spouse or children at:

  • Does the Education Office provide tutors?
    No, the Education Office does not provide tutors. We strongly encourage students to find their own study partners (availability permitting we can provide rooms for studying).
