Chipping 101

The difference between a chip shot and a pitch shot is the ratio of ground time to airtime. In a chip shot, the ball travels a greater distance on the ground than in the air.  In a pitch shot the ball travels a greater distance in the air than on the ground.  The difference between a 20-handicap golfer and a single digit golfer is the ability to chip well.

Here are a few basics that you need to know.  I will describe how a right-handed golfer would make the shot.  If you are left-handed just reverse the positions.

  1. Since the chip shot has a low trajectory you need to position the ball back in your stance.  Back in your stance means position the ball opposite your right foot.

  2. Hands are ahead of the ball.  This means the grip of your golf club should be pointing to your left thigh.

  3. Keep your weight on your left foot and keep it there through the entire shot.  Feel like you are leaning to the left.

  4. Swing the club head back and through with your shoulders.  It should feel like you are using your putting stroke to strike the ball.  Make sure to keep your wrists firm all the way through impact, don’t let your right hand pass your left.  What I mean is, don’t let your left wrist bend.

  5. Hold your finish.  This not only looks cool, it also let’s you know if you kept your wrist firm through the shot.

The setup and swing technique described above promotes a downward decent of the club head.   You don’t even have to think about it, just let it happen.  If you are just getting started holding your finish every time you chip will really help you improve your technique rapidly.  Firm wrists equal’s solid contact and more chances to get the ball close to the hole. Also, don’t fall in love with just one club, try using all of the clubs and see what they can do for you.

Basically chipping is just putting with loft, it’s that simple.  Just use the proper technique and with a little practice you will start having more one putts and a lower score very soon.

Until next time, I wish you good luck and great golf.
