Long Winter? G.A.S.P. For Fresh Spring Air
Although we have the good fortune of living in Southern California, the winter months still tend to keep us away from getting out to the golf course as much as we would like. Shorter days, frost, and even some rain prevent us from playing too often. When we do come back to the game, we should check the setup - the foundation of any good golf swing. One easy way to remember this is the acronym, G.A.S.P., or, grip, alignment, stance, and posture. Thank you to MCAS Miramar's own Sgt. Keith Thomas for demonstrating these fantastic positions!
Grip:
When you place your hands on the club, the club should rest primarily in the fingers of the lead hand (left hand for a right-handed player). Next, when the two "V's" are formed (as shown), ensure that they point between the trailing ear and shoulder. |
Alignment:
Always aim the clubface first! Allow your feet to work in conjunction with the angle of the club to ensure that you are lined up to your target. Pay careful attention to the shoulders as they are the most important aspect of your body lines. Here, Sgt Thomas is demonstrating a great way to use the alignment sticks mentioned in our featured product section above! |
Stance:
Think like an athlete here. The most important part of your stance is that you are not bending too much or to little from the knees. For those of you that have served or are currently serving, you definitely know what happens if you lock your knees! The best analogy I've heard is that it your stance should provide you with the same freedom of movement as a shortstop in baseball. Ball position should be just forward of the sternum with the irons, slightly forward of that for hybrids and fairway woods, and just inside the lead heel for the driver. Ball position for a 7-iron is shown here, and you can see that it is positioned just in front of the sternum. |
Posture:
Similar to the stance, your posture should be athletic. Bend from the hips and not the shoulders. Your arms should hang virtually underneath your shoulders to give you the best chance at returning the club directly to the ball at impact. At this point, your chest should be nearly facing the target line. |
Use a mirror to see yourself in these positions. Ask yourself, where is my weight? Am I in balance? What does this look and feel like? After any time away from the game, it is critical that we pay careful attention to the setup in its entirety. The better you are at repeating a tour-quality setup, the better chance you will have of striking tour-quality golf shots!
Play Well,
Michael C. Jones, PGA
