Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to use The Great Escape?
The Great Escape is an enlisted recreation center.
The facility is open to all active duty and reservist enlisted personnel.

Will I need to sign in when I enter the facility?
Whether you are in uniform or not, you will need to scan your military ID card in order to enter the facility.

As an active duty enlisted person can I sponsor a guest into The Great Escape?
Yes, as an eligible patron of The Great Escape you are permitted to sponsor two guests.

Is there a place to eat in The Great Escape?
There is a walk-up window to Pizza Hut Express, the SODEXHO restaurant located in the same building. You are also permitted to bring in food and beverages, which you are responsible for the clean up of.

Can you smoke and/or drink alcoholic beverages in the facility?
The Great Escape is a non-smoking, non-alcohol facility. It was set up as an alternative to the club as a place for service members to relax.

What’s an Off Base Adventure?
An Off Base Adventure (OBA) is another name for the trips our facility organizes. We offer trips that take our service members everywhere, from Southern Californian amusement parks to sporting events, the beach and even TV tapings. (Ask about our Price is Right winners!) Off Base Adventures range in price from free to $40.

Is The Great Escape part of MCCS?
The Great Escape falls under the Semper Fit division of MCCS (along with Sports and Athletics, Fitness, Outdoor Adventure Center, and the Single Marine Program).

Is it free to use The Great Escape?
Everything in The Great Escape is free with the exception of a few video games, Pizza Hut Express and the Cyber Zone Computer Room.

Why does it cost to use the Cyber Zone?
The Cyber Zone is a contracted computer system. We currently do not have the money to purchase our own computers, or for the 24-hour technical support the computers require. The cost is minimal (between 10¢ and 12¢ per minute). In San Diego, several of the Cyber Cafes charge $8 - $12 per hour, in addition to minimum purchases of food and beverage.

What does The Great Escape do for the holidays?
Not only do we remain open 365 days of the year, but we also offer extended hours during holidays throughout the year. For the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, The Great Escape hosts a program called Home for the Holidays.

What is the Home for the Holidays Program?
The Home for the Holidays Program is a program that started over 15 years ago as a way to bring the service members and San Diego community together for the holidays. Many of our service members are unable to go home to their families so we have host families adopt them for a day or two. Though we don’t advertise to the San Diego community, we always have families that call on their own who are interested in how they can make the holiday happier for our troops. We do advertise to service members in order to make them aware of the generous offers from numerous families.
