The Great Escape was conceived and inspired
by Mr. Bob Gale, the former MWR Director at NAS Miramar, who, as a young
sailor, always dreamed of having a place to go when he had little money in
his pockets. The Great Escape enlisted recreation center originally opened at NAS
Miramar in June, 1986, in Bldg. M-273, as the very first non-alcohol,
enlisted only, recreation center in the Navy. Shortly after opening, The Great Escape became a model facility throughout
the Armed Forces. It developed into a model for quality recreation
programming on base with a non-military atmosphere.
In order to become more cost-effective and to be located closer to enlisted
quarters, MWR began renovating a section of the Enlisted Club into a
first-class facility, carrying on the tradition of what The Great Escape was created for. |
