BACKGROUND

The Great Escape enlisted recreation center is located at the east end of Bldg. 5509. The Great Escape was developed as an alternative to the enlisted club and also is the “home away from home” for our active duty enlisted personnel stationed at and visiting MCAS Miramar. Its mission is to provide an alternative to alcohol and substance use, to improve morale, encourage retention, and to provide life-long leisure skills at little or no cost to the service member. The first thing that you will notice when you walk into The Great Escape is the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

HOW IT BEGAN

  Mr. Bob Gale - Founder
The Great Escape was conceived and inspired by Mr. Bob Gale, the former MWR Director at NAS Miramar, who, as a young sailor, always dreamed of having a place to go when he had little money in his pockets. The Great Escape enlisted recreation center originally opened at NAS Miramar in June, 1986, in Bldg. M-273, as the very first non-alcohol, enlisted only, recreation center in the Navy. Shortly after opening, The Great Escape became a model facility throughout the Armed Forces. It developed into a model for quality recreation programming on base with a non-military atmosphere.
In order to become more cost-effective and to be located closer to enlisted quarters, MWR began renovating a section of the Enlisted Club into a first-class facility, carrying on the tradition of what The Great Escape was created for.
Mr. Bob Gale, Founder - The Great Escape
In October, 1997, NAS Miramar became MCAS Miramar. The Great Escape has and continues to provide quality recreational programming in a first-class facility for active duty and Reserve enlisted men and women at MCAS Miramar and in the San Diego area.
