Internet Resources
Prior to reviewing information on the sites listed below, we ask that you review the following prior to reaching out to the many resources which are available to you...
You are not alone...
It's the Web
Nearly every website you visit will have links to additional information. This is what makes the "Web" so helpful when searching for information. Because it is so easy to "surf" along, following interesting links, sometimes you'll have to force yourself to stay focused.
Hiding your tracks
You leave a "history" of the places you've visited on the computer, and another person using that computer may look at that history, and even look at the same pages you looked at. You may not want others to see where you have been, or what sort of information you have been looking for. Here's how to clear it:
Click on Tools at the top of your browser window. Click on Internet Options.... In the box labeled Temporary Internet Files, click on Delete Files... In the box labeled History, click on Clear History.
Do you Google?
About 68 million people use Google each month to find information. It's easy, but it helps to understand how to use a search engine. Go to www.google.com and enter keywords in the search window. Google ignores very common words, so leave out "the" and "of" and words like them. If words need to be grouped together, like family violence, use quotes: "family violence" will only find pages where the two words are together, instead of all pages which have both words but perhaps in
a different context. It is generally better to use lower case letters when searching.
A search for rape crisis oceanside, for example, will find all websites with those words--more than 400! Refining the search to rape crisis oceanside ca narrowed in down to about 200. Adding two more words, center and counseling, further narrowed it down to less than 100. If there is a language requirement, like Spanish or French, include it in the search.
Check your sources
Your information is only as good as the information provider. Look to see whose page it is. Is it a government agency? Is it a recognized non-profit organization, like the Red Cross or YWCA? Trusting the content provider is important.
